Change 4 Life
Each year group at West Haddon Primary School are currently experiencing a three week block of activities linked to the Change for Life programme. The children work in small teams with parent volunteers and have cooked healthy recipes.
An example of this is flapjack where they replaced syrup with honey and had the opportunity to include ingredients such as apricots, pumpkin and sunflower seeds and raisins. This encourages children to weigh out ingredients, mix them and then cook. Naturally they enjoy eating them and I have heard that several children have then gone home to cook the recipe again. We are trying to encourage children to eat healthily and think about the foods they are eating. To support this, they are completing a food diary for one week and then as a class we talk about the food choices we have all made.
In addition to this the children also participate in a circuits programme where they complete different exercises and record their times and look to improve them over the three week block. To support this we are asking children, with the support of parents, to complete a sports survey so we can improve the provision of clubs in school and highlight the importance of participating in sports.
The feedback from the children has been very positive and they have particularly enjoyed the cooking aspect and I hope this continues into their teenage years and beyond. Below is a link to the Change for Life website and I recommend parents to have a browse as it has some excellent recipes, activities and general information.
On the side of our page are a few great recipies! Why not give them a try?
